Research: padel competition raises brain-health myokines

A peer-reviewed study found that a single padel match significantly increases BDNF, LIF and irisin — the muscle-released molecules linked to brain health, learning and memory.

Twenty-four trained padel players (14 women, 10 men, mean age 27.8) had their blood measured before and after simulated padel competition. The researchers tracked three myokines — brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) and irisin — molecules released by working muscle that cross-talk with the brain.

All three rose after competition. BDNF in particular is one of the best-documented mediators of neuroplasticity: it supports the formation of new connections, faster learning and better memory consolidation. Irisin and LIF are associated with neuroprotection and with the brain's response to exercise.

The practical reading for a player: padel is not only a physical workout, it is a stimulus that puts the brain in a state where it learns better. That is why we place cognitive work — reaction drills, decision games, visual scanning — close to court time rather than as a separate desk exercise.
