First-step speed at the net starts before you move

Where you look, what you expect and how you stand decide how fast you get there. Then the physical side takes over.

Reaction time in sport is largely a perception problem. Skilled players are not simply faster — they pick up earlier cues and act on smaller amounts of information.

The physical side still matters: you cannot express a good decision without the ability to accelerate from a low, stable position.

Train both, and test them in situations that resemble the game.
